OH HEY, FRIDAY! | THE WEEK I WENT INSANE

Friday, February 26, 2016
what a week. what a freak-show of an effing week.

kaye was a monster - which made me a monster.

sawyer was sick // still fighting it.

farming all of a sudden has reared its head so my farmer has had some late nights...and i didn't realize how emotionally unprepared i was for the season to start.

what happened to my weekend ski trips and too much beer?

but hey...we've still got each other...and oh hey, friday! get busy.

1 | my questionnaire
yesterday i wrote up a post that included a questionnaire about blogging and what you all prefer to read about...and what you might want to read about.
out of over 200 responses...there was an overwhelming outcry for MORE FARMER
i'm not even sure if i should be flattered or jealous...maybe a little of both?
but...ask and you shall receive. and yes, he totally rocks a speedo at each and every opportunity.
oh! and if you want to fill out the questionnaire...please do! it's been absolutely wonderful reading all of your comments and questions! CLICK HERE

2 | weehoo
friends. weehoo doesn't quite begin to explain the awesomeness of this bike train. the sun has been shining + minimal wind out in our neck of the woods so i took my best gals on my first bike ride...towing an additional 80+ pounds (gals + weight of the weehoo). i was super nervous at first going down the giant hill that his our driveway, but after that we cruised. it was so fun and it bought me 30 minutes of blissful silence. i didn't hear either girl whine or cry the entire time. i looked back at kaye at one point and asked how she was doing. her response - doin' good mama! my hands are a little bit cold. other than that...not a peep. #winning
i see daily bike rides in our future. (ps. while going down giant hills is scary...riding up them SUCKS.)

3 | politics
i don't normally chat politics in general...like...ever. i keep my thoughts my bizz and that's that. and that's that! some people are all about it. not my thang. however...what is my thang is the insanity that is surrounding trump. granted...me posting this isn't helping squash the buzz, but this video speaks. give it a look.

4 | spring clothing
i don't know what it is about the weather shifting, but it brings out the very worst in me and my credit card. give me all things floral and bright...and apparently ruffled? like this mustard sweater. i'm nearly certain it won't look good on me...because ruffled shoulders on a 32 year old??? but you better believe i ordered it, because well, you just never know.

and this shirt i ordered in two colors - again...the ruffle. i'm either going to be super jazzed or super sad.
i'm also on the hunt for some new white denim pants. i used to have a GREAT pair that i wore and wore and wore...but apparently breast feeding sucked all the fat and muscle from no other place except my thighs and booty...and they no longer fit. so maybe these will do the trick? or...i could bite the bullet and go for these or these because AG pants just seem to fit my booty the best these days.
when can we start wearing white pants? after memorial day? i don't think so.
5 | so, i've been thinking...i need to sign up for another half marathon. i've completed three in the boise area. wouldn't it be fun and motivating to travel to complete a race? am i crazy? so here's my question -
is there a great half marathon race where you live?
double bonus (for me, not you) - if i travel to where you are you can give me all the very best recommendations on where to stay and eat.
and if none of that ever happens...it's worth mentioning i forked over some cash and bought my yearly running shoes. i purchase every february // march and i can't wait for these to be delivered. i bought last year's version and they were WONDERFUL.
but enough about that...it's friday and you should totally LINK UP!

I NEED YOUR HELP!

Thursday, February 25, 2016
so...i need your help. i've been curious about doing a questionnaire post for awhile now. i'd love to get to know the people who read this blog a little more. your likes // dislikes // what you'd like to see more of // what you'd like to see less of...etc. etc.

can't wait to make this space more interesting and creative and funny and and better...than it's current state.

IT WAS A ROUGH...ROUGH DAY

Wednesday, February 24, 2016

yesterday was a bad day.

kaye actually looked at me at one point around 4 pm and told me i had crazy eyes.

and you know what. i probably did.

i had been at the end of my sanity rope since about 1 pm.

sawyer had already blown out two diapers and i'm nearly positive ate the better part of a large, pink crayon. i guess that will be confirmed tomorrow when i see crayola paper in her drawers.

overall, i would say sawyer was perpetually unhappy the majority of the day. minus the 20 minutes i put her in the shower because i wasn't sure what else to do with her. and she liked lunch. and she wasn't crying during her nap...so there were a few wins in there.

kaye was great...and usually is great unless something completely and totally obscure and irrelevant sets her off...then you would think i told her i was going to burn all her toys in front of her. huh?

sobbing - fit throwing - screaming - negotiating

99% of the time i try my entire bag of tricks...and 99% of the time i end up sending her to her room until she can calm down.

the particular kaye-fit that induced my crazy eyes had to do with a band-aid and her requesting i take it off her knee...and then not wanting me to take it off. and then wanting me to take it off...and then not wanting me to take it off. finally...i told her i was done and that when she was ready to come get me i'd help her out. this just made her scream and cry harder. so i told her she needed to go calm down in her room. and she did.

all about a bandaid covering a non-existent wound.

she soon came upstairs and told me she was calm and ready to be a good girl. great! exactly what i wanted to hear...especially because sawyer hadn't stopped crying for nearly two hours. granted...she's sick, but when it gets to the point where she insists on me holding her and insists on crying directly in my ear...i could feel my sanity slipping.

there was a blessed moment where sawyer faked interest in the iPad. kaye was quickly onto her game and ripped it from her hands. sawyer broke our blessed peace with wales of grief and i told kaye she needed to give it back.

first - kaye wouldn't give the iPad back.

second - kaye threw a fit and actually stomped her feet. i was like...uhh? oh no you di'int.

so now kaye was crying AND sawyer was still crying. i could feel the crazy boiling up inside me. if i'm recalling correctly i think i clapped my hands loudly three times and i may have even growled in frustration. and by growled i mean screamed or cursed or maybe it was an actual growl. whatever it was...it wasn't my finest moment.

my finest moment came in the seconds that followed when i had a moment of clarity and picked sawyer up and put her in her crib. i then grabbed kaye and put kaye in sawyer's crib.

kaye is fully capable of crawling out of said crib but i do believe they were both flabbergasted. i watched the monitor as they looked at each other and looked to the door and back to each other. several minutes of glorious silence passed. pretty soon kaye had sawyer laughing and i hear kaye say over the monitor, "see mommy. bitty likes me. she's laughin'"

nothing like sweet words from your three year old to make you feel like a crazed asshole.

and then...as i sit here writing i realize our day wasn't so bad. just about five hours were rough. we started off with kaye wearing her new sunglasses saying, "i'm going to be a movie star."

we headed over to the shop and visited our farmer while he worked on equipment. we walked down and saw some chickens and the goats.

later, while bitty napped, kaye and i got our workout in.

after lunch we headed outside - it was the first time i was excited it was windy. i had purchased a kite for the gals in california and we needed to give it a test run. kaye got a turn. bitty got a turn. i chased after it more than five times when they inevitably let the handle go...even after i reminded kaye each time, "hold on super tight with your super strength." she cried and told me, "i don't have super strength, mama."

let's just forget our rough moments. we had a good day.

oh hey, friday!

that's right! i'm in sunny windy // rainy california visiting my seeeeester, her hubs, and my sweety-sweet niece, reese. or as kaye calls her - reesey poo-poo.

M Y  F I V E - a little recap

1 | recipes!

a few weeks ago i was chatting about how i really needed to jazz things up in the kitchen. i pinned five new recipes i wanted to try and i got busy!
so far i've made three of the five and i'm here to tell you about it.
these tacos. yuuuuummmmm! they are spicy, but not too spicy. the cilantro cream dressing is delicious. everything about them...devour.
i did make a few substitutions -
+ instead of sour cream i used greek yogurt
+ instead of corn tortillas i used whole grain
this fish. i'm telling you. if you get a chance to make this...do. do 1000000 times. i'm a big fan. my farmer is a big fan. and even my two best gals enjoy some salmon. we paired it with the quinoa and i'd say it's a pretty impressive meal to serve.
this soup. i can't say enough BAD things about this soup. it's only redeeming quality was when i cooked the bacon. my farmer couldn't even stomach it. and he's a farmer. a hungry farmer at that. i can honestly say (to my knowledge) it's the only thing i've cooked that he hasn't liked. it was truly terrible.
2 | ummm...did you see? i dedicated an entire post to offer up some design services! have a set of business cards been on your radar? let's do it! $40 get's you a front and backer custom design. i'll send you the print file and you can print at the place of your choosing. just like that! questions? e-mail me!
3 | on wednesday i was writing all about my creative energies being snatched right up from this blog space and being poured into my design work...and it's making me a touch sad. so i thought...time to bust out of the creative funk excuse and put together a list of sure-fire post ideas that are fun reads on topics i'd be happy to write about! and then i shared the list with all of you. because that's what we do. help each other out.
want to see that list? click here.

20 BLOG POST IDEAS FOR YOUR SCHLUMP

Thursday, February 18, 2016

i'm guilty. guilty guilty guilty.

i've been copping out so so hard on writing any blog posts. truth is...i've been spending all my spare moments designing, researching design, gathering inspiration for designing...and when i'm not doing that i'm forcing my children to cuddle me.

side note - sawyer. that girl. her open-mouthed kisses will never get old. she's far more affectionate than her sister ever was at her age...and i luuuuurrrrve it. granted...her affections are quite passive aggressive. she'll be slapping you in the face one moment with a lego horse and hugging you the next. but that's the crazy in her...just like her mama.

but back to it.

i've been slacking. i've been lacking. it's not that i don't have anything to write about...it's that i just have been asking myself...why would anyone want to read it? i want to share inspirational, beautiful things. not blurry iPhone pictures.

so maybe i'm at that moment when i start expanding this space to accommodate more of what i feel will pacify my creative side.

think - less 47 week pregnancy update // more here is what i'm designing lately.

less here's a cookie recipe // more here are my favorite booty workouts.

time to be a little more assertive with what i'm putting out in this space. i've never been passionate about baking. i've always been passionate about squats...in a very love to hate way.

maybe in an effort to accomplish this task i'll actually start keeping one of those blogging calendars...but i'm certainly not going to hold my breath. next month. march sounds like a great time to keep a blog calendar.

in the meantime. i popped around and gathered up some of my favorite post ideas...you know. for those times when you want to put something out but just keep drawing a blank.

1. favorite bloggers
2. if you knew me in high school
3. if you knew me in college
4. blog questionnaire
5. top netflix binge watches
6. be a vegetarian for a week
7. if you lived in my city...favorite things to do
8. favorite workout gear
9. favorite instagram accounts
10. seasonal clothing must-haves
11. if i could redo college...
12. a day in my life
13. blogging resource list
14. best of post...best recipes // best workouts // best posts
15. favorite cleaning products (i seriously want to do this one...because i'm weird like that)
16. before + after
17. how to...do anything. like...make a bed. pack a suitcase. workout with children.
18. review your worst posts
19. FAQ - still want to do this via vlog.
20. and lastly - pet peeve post

VALENTINES DAY SCHMALENTINES DAY

Tuesday, February 16, 2016

no no no. let me start over. the title of my post doesn't do our valentines day justice.

our valentines day was actually pretty wonderful. not romantic in the slightest...but we keep the passion burning the other 364 days a year...eh hum...or something like that.

our valentines day started off with my farmer making all this best gals some oddly shaped pancakes. he totally insisted they were hearts. like...actual replicas of the hearts beating in our chests. he actually used the word cross section. and you're right. the pancakes looking nothing like valentine hearts...so we'll give him the benefit of the doubt and go with his cross section.

after gobbling those up i had my gals open their valentines they had received from all our fellow blogger mamas...and they made it rain. candy, crayons, candy, glow sticks, a little flashlight, homemade watercolor pictures...it was wonderful.

the gals also received some new activity books from their nana and papa (my parents...thank you nana and papa!) and some books from the farmer and me.

speaking of books...we got kaye the pinkalicious set for christmas and then some more pinkalicious for valentines day. yes. 100 times yes. they are such cute books and kaye LOVES them.

sawyer got this book and it's also pretty stellar. the pictures are raised and indented and it also gives you key words to point out that you might not normally think to talk about. highly recommend. sawyer loves running her fingers all over the pages. i'm not doing it justice. just add it to your list.

anyway...back to our super romantic v-day.

later in the day we headed to the big city to attend brody's birthday party. i'll let the pictures do the talking, but let's just say kaye had the very very best time. sawyer had fun. farmer had fun too. i ate cake.

when kaye wasn't busy running a muck and beating up on beckam...

i was forcing her to take pictures of me...and she was also showing some serious attitude. i'm really not sure what to do with this girl in a few years. i'm scared. so very very scared.
there was a bounce house, a million slides, a rock wall (i'll get to that), and a special section for little muffins...just like my sawyer.
she was busy. definitely no time to slow down for photo opps.

get off me, mom. put your camera away, mom. sawyer is totally going to have that super annoyed teenager voice. i can already hear it.

meanwhile...my farmer was appropriately picked on...
probably because of stunts like this...
see that gal trapped up against the rock wall? you know, she's just trying to help her kid. that's amy of the farmer's wife. and my farmer can't help but straight up harass her. thank god she's a good sport.

meanwhile...instead of saving his wife from my farmer, amy's farmer was busy testing his skills on the pole...rope. testing his skills on the rope.
kaye took the whole rock climbing bit pretty seriously. she had things to do...like conquering the tire wall.
we're clearly not afraid of heights. so...there's that.
the party was a total success and i'm strongly considering ditching all the work it takes to put into a backyard party (so. much. work!) and just renting a facility. the kids had so much fun and there was way less clean-up involved.

oh! and in honor of valentines day...let me throw in this super sweet picture of my sawyer-muff giving all her love to amy's new boy, bennett. this was one of six hugs and she proceeded to kiss him twice and poke his eye once.
love at first sight.

following cake consumption we had plans to meet up with my mom for pizza. again...so romantic.
it really was a fantastic day. and even though amy got the most action pressed up against a rock wall...i still felt all the love from my farmer and two best gals.

xoxo

OH HEY, FRIDAY! | SNEAK PEAKS, PINS, + AN IDEA

Friday, February 12, 2016

ummm...my brain is shot.

i spent the better part of two hours trying to figure out who hosts my domain // how to transfer my domain // what the eff a domain is (kidding...i know what a domain is)...but really. hosting your website is no joke and i have a new appreciation for wonderfully smart, wonderfully nerdy people who can walk themselves around all of that bizz.

i used to pride myself in being a computer nerd...but it's clear. i'm waaaaaaay down here...and they are waaaaaaay way up there. we don't even speak the same love language.

but i know someone who does speak my love language! it's you...and it's blogging. let's get linked up.

1 | pinterest
so...i try to make my farmer a homemade card for all our occasions - birthday // anniversary // valentines day. i write ooey-gooey, mushy, lovey-dovey things in them and card and then i give him lots of gross kisses, he acts very appreciative...and that's our tradition. lately...i've been the worst. but in a few days...i'll be the best. i've gotten some great valentine ideas from pinterest lately, and i wanted to share a few...
is it at all obvious that my farmer is going to get lucky on v-day? only on holidays, people. only on holidays.

2 | workouts + nutrition
*pats self on back. you guys - i kind of killed it this week. i killed it in the workout department. i have a new loathing for anything kettlebell related but have a new appreciation for arm workouts. my arms, shoulders, and back has been where i've noticed the biggest changes this  8 week challenge...which is wonderful because i so totally suffer from flappy arms when i stop working out. i've also noticed some booty-lift...must be all those freaking kettlebell squats and jacks and lunges and burpies.
3 | sneak peak
i suck at surprises. i just can't wait to share all the beauties i put together for my very own labor of love...karli bell branding & design.
i'm still a month out from launching, but when it does happen...you can expect me to shout it from the rooftops. my website will have a blog attached...so now i'm wondering if i should just merge the two or keep one professional and one where i can talk about how i almost jumped across the post office counter and strangled the smug clerk over children's valentines. but let's get back to my happy place...here's a sneak peak!
4 | eeeeee! i'm so excited! in addition to finally getting my own pages designed i've been working on a few different projects this past week and it's been a wonderful learning experience. i'm almost finished with the branding of jessica's business, pearl & monroe, and i can't help but share a few things!
to give you some background - jessica blogs over at the newly, and had the wonderful idea of starting up an online clothing boutique. her style is so classy and clean and flawless...it just made sense. she e-mailed me so so so long ago about designing a logo for her and it's been a work in progress ever since. i'm so excited for her final branding rollout so that all her social media, and print materials are consistent and beautiful and recognizable! i designed stickers, correspondence cards, business cards, a Facebook cover page, and her paypal invoices. i hope jessica is as in love with everything as i am!

a feature! savannah | happily ever nichols

Thursday, February 11, 2016
happy almost friday, friends. we've nearly completed another work week.

i've pulled out a little more hair...what little i have left after two children. (it's not recovering.)
i've had way way too much coffee.
my workouts have been on point.
nutrition has been pretty stellar too!

i'd say i'm shooting under par. now if i can just find a babysitter for valentine's day...

#notgonnahappen

but this is all besides the point. why talk about me when i can talk about fabulous, motivated, beautiful gals...like savannah!

i have savannah here from happily ever nichols...and she's just the sweetest. just the cutest. and i'm just so happy to introduce you to her...except you probably already read her. but if you don't...or if you do...

This year I did not write an "official" list. I feel like if they are on the list I won't get to them. Instead, I think of them as goals that don't necessarily have to finished within the year. Progress is key! My goals consist of loosing those last 10 pounds to get down to my pre pregnancy weight, getting into the masters program, and landing my dream internship.

WHEN VALENTINES DAY GOES SO, SO RIGHT

Tuesday, February 09, 2016
oh mercy. the things we do to give our kids a thrill. no, seriously.

i'm a part of this great blogging group full of super, amazing moms. someone threw out the idea of a valentine exchange this year...and since i had never done any sort of exchange before, i was THRILLED to get the opportunity. i knew it was going to be so much fun for kaye...and sawyer...kind of sawyer.

so i signed up. picked the valentines i was going to send. ordered my supplies. i was ready.

well, after the supplies came, i personalized the graphic (more on that down below), and practiced my calligraphy skills on the envelopes...my valentines were ready to be dropped in the mail.

i packed all 26 valentines into a bag and walked into the post office...super proud. my valentines  sawyer and kaye's valentines looked so so cute.

that's when the postman punched me in the gut

ma'am. your valentines won't post for the standard rate. they are too thick.

so instead of paying 78 cents to mail 26 valentines...i paid $2.43. each. i about shit myself right then and there. i was like...you have got to be effing kidding me. no seriously...that's what i said to the postman.

long story long - i ended up paying over $60 to mail those valentines. do you know what i could have purchased with $60? yeah.

the silver lining to the story is - i've  my gals have received so many valentines from all over the country. i opened our mailbox one day to overflowing tiny packages decorated with sticker hearts and red marker. it was WONDERFUL.

i'm collecting all those tiny packages in a bag for the girls to be opened on v-day. i'm so so...so so excited. and i know kaye will be too. maybe sawyer.

and that's how their valentines day is going to go so so right.

but how is my valentines going to be so so right? hmmm...that is the question of the hour. come on farmer, don't let me down!

regardless...i'm here to show you how we made cute valentine's that were supposed to be ridiculously budget friendly...that ended up costing $100. ie. fancier than my wedding invitations.

i found our valentines on pinterest (obvs.) here. they were so simple and i knew i could personalize them in adobe illustrator. so i did.

i just changed the fonts, added the girls names, and enlarged them, so i could print two to a page...instead of four.

next, it was as easy as cutting each card out and taping the crayons to it.

guys - we're totally working on our cutting skills. i'm just surprised no blood was spilled.

for the crayons i just went on amazon and purchased four packs of crayola. i guess i could have bought a mega box of crayons, but i didn't want to have to deal with greys and browns = lame.

before i inserted the crayons // coloring cards i addressed all the envelopes. i'm not sure what got into me, but i thought it the perfect opportunity to practice my calligraphy. in hindsight, they didn't turn out too terribly, but it did take extra time, that's for sure!

#momoftheyear (or so i kept telling myself)

all my farmer kept saying was, "shouldn't kaye and sawyer be doing this?" and "is this how you're going to do their homework when they are in school?"

i'd like to say i responded sweetly.

so after calligraphy-ing the envelopes and then going back over each name in an attempt to make them look better...they were ready to head to the post office to see how much each would cost to mail.

i knew it was going to be more than standard rate...i was mailing three crayons p / envelope.

but when that man told me it was going to be over $2 p / envelope i nearly jumped across the counter. that's highway robbery! i was mailing children's valentines! good god.

what's done is done. i'm happy with the end result and i'm so so happy knowing that my gals will be beyond loved on february 14th. we can't WAIT to open all the little valentine packages the gals received!

a very happy valentine's day to all!

ps. i took off my gal's names in case anyone wanted to personalize this cute color by numbers valentine! just click here for the full PDF download!
if you would like to check out all the other gals i participated in this exchange with...i strongly encourage. #overachievers #putmetoshame
