THE BEST CHRISTMAS YET

Thursday, December 31, 2015

my farmer and i knew christmas was going to be fun this year because of kaye...but we didn't realize it was going to be the best christmas ever. the entire thing was absolutely magical.

it started with my farmer and i hosting christmas eve dinner. i decided to skip the formal dinner and just made a bunch of appetizers, desserts, and beverage. we had christmas music playing, the girls were running around and dancing, and everyone left properly food-filled and not thirsty. that's a win.

i'm a fan of appetizers any day of the week. maybe it's because there were so many cheese and crackers. cheeeeese.

it deserves a mention that sawyer is obsessed with all the males in her life and basically wants nothing to do with women...except her sister.

here she is getting her cuddle on with papa.

that night, after our families had gone home and sawyer was in bed my farmer and i remembered that we hadn't helped the girls write a letter to santa or set out any cookies and milk. whoops.

so i quickly dug a scrap piece of paper out of our drawer and kaye dictated the words she would like to share with santa. we set out a sugar cookie for santa, milk to wash it down, and a carrot for his reindeer.

about an hour later, my farmer and i snuck downstairs and began toting all the presents upstairs for under and next to the tree. (we had no clue the dollhouse was going to be five feet tall.) after a celebratory picture the farmer and i were beat and headed to bed.

when kaye woke up the next morning we heard her coming up the stairs so my farmer and i ran into the kitchen so we could watch her reaction when she saw all the goodies under the tree. we expected squeals of delight and jumping up and down. however, she immediately turned her head to the kitchen and spotted us crouching down behind the island. what??!

she said, "what are you guys doin'?"

exactly girl - what were we doing? your farmer and i are weird.

anyway...we showed kaye the half eaten cookie and the bitten carrot. her eyes were as big as saucers. she couldn't believe that santa came. we led her over to the tree and showed her her new dollhouse and all the gifts. she immediately wanted to wake up bitty and her uncle kody (my farmer's brother) so we could get the party started.

the favorite gifts were definitely - nike running shoes for bitty and the princess dress, doll house, pinkalicious book set, and all of sawyers gifts were kaye's favorites.

you would think kaye had never received a present in her life.

christmas dinner was spent at the in-law's house, but it was mostly used as a day of rest since we knew we would be skiing for the next three days straight.

we headed up to mccall on the 26th which was a winter wonderland. we went skiing, continued to eat way too many sweets, played in the snow, and just had a great time...except kaye. when the snow touched her skin you would have thought she was being burned by acid. thank god uncle kody was there to not save her...rather just pose for a picture. memory making.

i hope everyone had a fantastic holiday break with lots of fun and lots of rest...and lots of food and not too much drink. you know...just enough.

ps. oh hey, friday! will be back on january 8th! don't forget!

baby...it's cold outside...like, really cold.

Tuesday, December 29, 2015
baby - it's cold outside.

if you scrolled upon my instagram yesterday, you saw that i left my two best gals with my very best farmer and hit the ski hill with my very best brother-in-law (on my farmer's side...my only BiL on my farmer's side)...it was a whopping 8º up here in mccall.

and with 8º temperatures it's important to have the right gear...the right cute gear. riiiight? we all want to look super cute all bundled up.
pants // socks // beanie
mittens // shirt // neck gaiter
beanie // leggings // jacket
my quest to beef up my winter wardrobe started when i found this beanie for my farmer. i put it in his stocking. as soon as he opened it, it found its way to my head. my farmer said it looked better on me than him, so i proceeded to wear it for the next two days...and i'll probably wear it today too. don't get me wrong - it looks great for the man in your life, but a gal can easily sport this super cute hat and keep her ears perfectly retro and cozy.

but if you don't like the retro look - this one is cute...and this one, too.

moving on.

one of my very very most favorite pieces of equipment when skiing is my smartwool gaiter. friends - this tubular piece of wool is glorious. it takes the place of a scarf. i mean, i'm all about the scarves, but not when skiing, because when you have a giant piece of material wrapped around your neck when participating in winter sporting activities it isn't suuuuper comfortable. but this small piece of fabric is a must-have. it keeps your warm. it stays out of the way. and they make them for the sweet, little skier in your life, too! yes...i got kaye this one.

staying on the smartwool train - guys. smartwool makes the BEST socks for any occasion in your life. need a boot socks for your favorite boots? need running socks that you can wear more than once without washing? (yeah, i just said that.) need ski socks? it's my go-to brand.

and here's another tip - if you're doing any sort of winter sporting activity, it's suuuuuper important to layer, layer, layer. because, i mean, who knows what the conditions are going to be like. i ALWAYS like to start out with several layers and then shed those layers as my body gets warmed up...or as the weather warms up. and by layer i mean - NEVER LAYER WITH COTTON. that's just cray. so i like to go back to smartwool for my baselayers - pants and tops. what i like about these pants is that they have a thicker waste band. it tends to hold my wobbly bits in tight.

and this is the top i loooove. i wear it every single time i ski...it's also WONDERFUL for cold-weather running. it's the half-zip that makes this top so so great. if you feel yourself getting slightly overheated...just pull that zipper. instant cool-down.

if the half-zip isn't your thing, they also make a great crew neck - this, this, or this. but when buying your baselayers, make sure you pay attention to the thickness.

moving on to the very most important part of skiing (aside from your toes) - keeping your hands warm. friends - there is nothing worse than great snow and freezing fingers. but i've found the very most perfect glove to keep you warm and toasty. go getchaself a pair of hestra. i wear these mittens in a size seven (i have medium sized hands). my sister rocks the same pair and they are more than glorious if you are prone to cold appendages. and let's not forget my farmer - i bought these mittens for him last christmas.

as for outerwear - it's kind of like...what looks the best? at least that's how my farmer feels. me? i'm all about quality and thickness. six years ago i bought the most amazing patagonia ski jacket. it has gortex with sealed zippers and a down liner. ummm...yes please and thank you very much. it was originally $599, but i got it on sale for $300 - you can always find deals on ski gear. i still rock the same jacket and i don't see myself replacing it for several more years. even though they don't sell my exact jacket anymore, this is the comparable one, or maybe it's this one. truth be told - it's more than likely better than the jacket i've been rocking for the better part of a decade.

as for pants - i'm perfectly happy with an unlined pair of patagonia ski pants. i've used them on the coldest of days with zero complaint. you can buy the thickest pants with glorious fleece liners, but unless they are waterproof...you may as well submit yourself to having a wet booty. i'm a firm believer in - buy quality and don't worry about replacing for the next 10 years...or even longer. i'm approaching that 10 year mark, and these are going to be my next purchase. color - TBD.

cheers to many happy hours enjoying the great outdoors...and staying warm and happy in the process.

eeee! as i wait for kaye to wake up this christmas morning i can't help but be quite possibly the most excited i've ever been for santa's late-night visit.

(let's face it - santa really brought the heat this year...ie. 4.5 foot tall dollhouse.)

a huge part of me wants to wake kaye up and show her the half-eaten cookie and the bite the reindeer took of the carrot...

but first - the coffee.

happy happy christmas, friends!

oh hey, friday! | lately i've been...

Friday, December 18, 2015
we're all very aware the christmas is single digits away. eeeeeee! i can't wait to watch kaye's jaw hit the floor when she sees the christmas tree. right now we have zero presents underneath, but on christmas morning...boom.

but back to business - let's all take a little break from this here oh hey, friday! and make this our last one until january...january 8th, to be exact. so we'll see you back here in 2016!

also...if you did make it here today...

1 | ad sale!

i'm still plugging along with my little ad sale for my group giveaway! i'm planning a big one for january to get us all started off on the right foot - you know...resolutions and all. maybe you want to grow your blog? maybe you want to get fit? maybe you want to do both (i raised both my hands)...then let's do it!  i'd love for you to use the code FIT2016 for 50% off the group giveaway ad space! (or if you're thinking another ad space is more your style, feel free to do that! i'd never be opposed!)
2 | glorious glorious winter
i just need to give a shout out to freezing cold weather. i'm absolutely in love with it. it's because i've had SO MUCH TIME with my farmer lately. we went on a date a few weeks ago and stayed overnight in boise. we went to a christmas party and stayed overnight in boise...again. then we went to mccall to catch all the snow they've been getting and had an absolutely wonderful, out of this world time skiing the powder...which i had never really done before...it feels like you're bouncing on a cloud...not to mention he's been taking the girls a ton which allowed me to finish all the christmas cards i got to design this year. this cold weather...i love it.

speaking of time  and cold weather - all this cold weather gives me lots of inside time. time to design new goodies for some of you great blogging gals! (i'm sorry sarah! i swear i'll finish your business cards as soon as i see my computer again!)

what i'm saying is - with all this time and 2016 approaching, if you need business cards or a new logo or you're looking to freshen up some graphics on your blog or maybe you need some invitations or or or...really just anything, please let me know as i'd be beyond thrilled to help!

ps. i'm planning a big 2016 launch of karli bell branding & design - i can't wait! i'll have a little website and everything. hip hip!
so yeah...we've had so much time together AND he's been giving me so much time off from watching the girls...it's been fun.
3 | day date with my best gal
and by best gal...i mean my oldest gal. i took kaye to her first movie at the theatre yesterday - the good dinosaur. she basically had the best day of her life. she was eating her popcorn (healthy popcorn i made at home and stashed in my bag...shhhhh...), drinking her hot cocoa, watching a movie. everything was going wonderfully until she spilled the luke warm cocoa down the front of her halfway through the movie. did i mention the theatre was empty? so we took off her shirt, put her coat back on and finished the show...until the last five minutes when she had to go to the bathroom. yep...we missed the culmination, but i have a feeling everything worked out. kaye didn't seem to notice. she probably knew what was going to happen - she's smart like that.
after the movie we just happen to run into santa and snagged a picture. then, we had to go to the mall to get her a new shirt - damn. THEN...it was dinner time so i took my gal to pizza. i know - worst day ever.
4 | advice

what's everyone doing for the new year? i want to make it special for my gals - 3 and 1 - but i'm not really familiar with any traditions. maybe we'll do a fake toast at 8 pm...and let them stay up an hour late? super fun? anyway, any and all suggestions more than welcome!
5 | happy holidays!

a huge happy holidays and a very merry christmas to everyone! i hope we all get to spend lots of times with loved ones and those nearest and dearest. i hope the food is delicious and the beverage is plentiful and that you laugh until your face hurts. i hope your homes are cozy and warm and that we can all cherish this absolutely magical time of year!
ps. don't forget - mistletoe time...lots of it.

what it's like being without a computer + guest post | jessica @ being bradfords

Thursday, December 17, 2015
so...as it turns out...i've come to a realization.

i am 1000% addicted to my computer on so many levels.

+ i use it to workout.
+ i use it to make money.
+ i use it to blog.
+ i use it to shop.
+ i use it to do banking.
+ i use it waste time.
+ i use it to cook.

and that's just off the top of my head.

so the fact that i dug out my old macbook from 2005 so that i could bring to you jess from being bradfords says something - like maybe she's super cute and super fun and has a pretty good looking hunk she gets to brag on?

not only that, but jess is quasi-new-ish to this whole blogging community and i 100% assured her that we would show her so so much love...because let's face it - all you blogging gals that read september farm are so out of this world wonderful i just know you will show all the same support to our gal, jess.
i got to sit down (ie. e-mail back and forth) with jess recently to complete a little q + a. question and answer sessions are my very most favorite way to get to know a fellow blogger -

KARLI | we want to get to know you better - give us a quickie all about you!

JESS | my name is jess and i live in beautiful san diego with my hubby and two furbabies. i'm a 2nd grade teacher and i LOVE my job. my husband and i are both from las vegas. weird to grow up there, i know, but it seemed normal to us! i moved to san diego 2.5 years ago to finally join mark here. we did long distance for almost three years! i am a total book worm, pretend chef (in my own kitchen, of course), shopaholic, makeup lover, and wannabe crafter. i love sushi and i'll never turn down a latte or some frozen yogurt. i also try to spend as much time out side as possible, which isn't too hard when you live in san diego.

KARLI | why do you do this crazy blogging thing?

JESS | that's a great question. i got this random idea to start a blog one day and the nagging feeling in my heart never stopped until i actually did it. i thought it would be a fun way for our families to stay connected to our everyday lives, especially the family members who aren't on facebook. i also thought it would be a creative outlet for me to share my random thoughts about every day life. i was right about both! my family loves to hear about what we are up to and it's also a great way for me to share things i am passionate about or just happen to love at the moment.

KARLI | you're fairly new to blogging - what has been the hardest part about it for you? the easiest? what do you hope to improve on?

JESS | the hardest part was just to start. i created my blog last year when my husband left for his deployment, with the intent for it to be my project while he was gone. sadly, it took me six months to write my first post. i was so nervous to put so much of myself out there in such a vulnerable way. it was / is scary and i didn't know how people would react to my content.

the more i post, the more i feel encouraged by the people around me, though. i've gotten the sweetest comments and feedback, which makes me want to post even more. i feel like i've learned so much but i still have A TON to improve upon. i want to learn how to take better pictures and to seriously step up my editing game. i am also so new to coding and the whole creating a website thing. my skills are sadly lacking at the moment. haha!

KARLI | now a fun question - how did you meet your hunk of burnin' love?
JESS | we actually went to high school together and were in the same circle of friends. mark loves to say we were high school sweethearts or that i was in love with him...haha! so not true. we didn't actually date until much later. i had just moved back to Las Vegas from Reno for my first teaching job and he was on leave for thanksgiving weekend. we randomly commented on the same facebook post and ended up messaging back and forth. i was flirting hardcore and he seemed standoffish...major ego blow for me, haha! turns out he was playing it cool because he thought i was dating a mutual friend, which i wasn't. we ended up hanging out with a big group of friends, which turned into a pizza roll fight at my house (oh, boys...) and then led to him asking me out on a date. we went out the day after thanksgiving, where he ended up meeting my parents at happy hour. i know, i know...on the first date?? you would have to meet my parents to understand, they are super fun and not over-protective at all. we started dating and he proposed to me one year later on the anniversary of our first date. we've been together five years now!

KARLI | that's a way better story than me - borderline stalking my farmer until i wore him down and he had to propose. super romantic...

what are three things you can't live without?

JESS | coffee, family, and jesus. do i sound like a bumper sticker? haha!

i am a coffee girl to my core. it lifts me up in the morning and makes me feel alive at the awful hour of 5 am.
my family is super important to me. i talk to my mom every single day and consider mher more of a best friend than my mom. my family is loving, fun, and a little crazy all at the same time. a good kind of crazy, though. haha! that's what they all say, right??

my husband is my rock and my biggest supporter. he cracks me up daily and helps to calm my anxieties and worries. he balances me in a much needed way! i'm so blessed to have him in my life.

my faith is truly the core of who i am and without it i would be lost.

KARLI | coffee all day err day! and hip hip to hilarious husbands! (my farmer better be hilarious with all the grief he gives me!)

what's your favorite vacation spot?
JESS | oh man, that's so hard. there are so many places that i love to vacation...i would have to say monterey. it's where mark proposed and it's just such a calming and gorgeous place to visit. we went back this summer and had such a great time. you can read about our awesome road trip up the cost here and  here
also, we took a trip to savannah, georgia to see mark's brother who plays minor league baseball. it was a surprise trip for chase so he could see mark before he deployed. we absolutely loved the history in savannah and oh my goodness - the food was soooo delicious! it was such an amazing trip!
as for our next vacation, we would love to go to boston to see mark's cousin. i've only been to a couple places on the east coast and boston is definitely on my bucket list. we are trying to figure out a trip in the spring, so fingers crossed it works out!

KARLI oooo! my farmer and i drove up the cost of california a few years ago and drove through monterey. we will 100% be going back to get the full experience because it looks absolutely charming and wonderful and relaxing and gorgeous. yes yes yes!

my favorite question - if you could be a real housewife...whcih city would you be a part of? why?

JESS | oh! i love the orange county women! vickie is one of my faves! she's an OG and i love how crazy she can get haha! i think my favorite city is still the new york housewives though, but not the current cast, the original ladies. i love the idea of vacationing in the hamptons and living in those beautiful old buildings. plus, i love bethany, especially when she was besties with jill.

KARLI | girl - i can't get enough of them. and have you seen the latest cast from cheshire?! oh lord. the entire thing needs to be subtitled - i can barely understand them. i wish i had an accent. anyway...on to far more sophisticated things...

you're a reader! can you recommend a must read for these cold winter months?

JESS | i just finished some great books! one of my favorites that i recently read is the good girl by mary kubica. this is the kind of book where you can sink into a comfy spot with a glass of wine or hot cocoa (whatever your preference!) and get sucked in. it's a mystery with hints of a love story and lots of twists and turns. such a page-turner! also, if you haven't read the nightingale by kristin hannah, stop everything you are doing and order this book now. it is that good! it has to be my favorite that i've read that i've read so far this year.

i also loved circling the sun by paula mcclain, the other daughter  by lauren willig, and fates and furies by lauren groff. to learn more about these books check out the book over-reviews on my blog!

KARLI | oh lord to find the time to read again. it'll happen for me, one day, right? right.

gal! thank you so so much for being on the blog today! i just know you're going to find the community even better and more supportive the longer you do it!

(and stick with it when it comes to learning how to code and edit. TOTALLY worth it!)

and for everyone else! don't be afraid to visit jess in all her social media outlets!

don't forget to check out jess' favorite posts!

A sad sad story...

Tuesday, December 15, 2015
Sad story - we were in McCall this past weekend enjoying the feet of powdery snow when reality came knocking and we had to pack up and return to the farm...you know...because you can't vacation forever!

In our haste to get on the road before nap time I left my damn laptop. My damn damn laptop! No online Christmas shopping. No branding and logo designing. No blogging. At least not until I can figure out how to get my laptop that is sitting peacefully three hours away.

I guess I'll have to be on a forced sobatical for the next six days. I'm not happy about it.

So, as I sit here pecking this out on my iPhone, enjoy your full sized keyboard. I'm jealous.

oh hey, friday! | i was at a christmas party last night

Friday, December 11, 2015
hey all you party people! i am 100% bowing out of oh hey, friday! seeing as how i was at a company christmas party not more than four hours ago.
good news - i won cards against humanity in the white elephant gift exchange...so there's that!

it was either that game or pin the hose on the fireman. ummm...yeah. also...have you heard of a tuggie? don't google it.

oh! and obviously amy's not here - since she had her little baby boy three days ago! and by little i mean he was 9 pounds 2 ounces of glorious, cuddle muffin-ness. oh yes...i got to hold him and he's pure perfection. i'd expect nothing else of amy.

but this doesn't mean we don't want you to get your link-up on! and so you should!

but first, i do have one order of business! i'm hoping to plan a killer january group giveaway full of awesomeness - you know - to keep us honest to our resolutions. so...if one of your goals is to grow your blog, this is an awesome way to do it! plus, i'd love for you to use the code FIT2016 for 50% off the group giveaway ad space!

regardless - it really is the most wonderful time of the year...and to make it even better we have three wonderful ladies on the blog that i'd just LOVE for you to meet! two new wonderful blog reads and a clothing shop full of all the descriptive apparel you could ever want! our christmas card!

Tuesday, December 08, 2015

our christmas cards. i look forward to them every year! and every year i promise myself that i'm going to write a letter to family and friends highlighting our year. and then i don't, because...i don't.

this year i also promised myself that i would design them. because who doesn't get a certain amount of pride in showing off something you've created?

but then...then i offered up my services to make holiday cards for friends near and far and well...there just wasn't time to snazzy up a card.

so...i jumped on the minted site and got to work "liking" all my favorites and then narrowing it down from there. i think the best part is that you can upload the photo you would like to use and then see that photo on all the cards at once. that's amazing.

once i chose the final card i used their address assistant to address all of our envelopes. eh hum...that means none of my crappy handwriting was to be found on all the beautiful envelopes. that's a win!

i also had the option of picking a matching return address wrapper - i would have had to be a fool to say no...the complete package turned out so! darn! cute!

the best part - now that they've been sitting on my kitchen counter for two weeks, i'm going to finally pop them in the mail...today.

so, if you're in a pinch for a beautiful holiday card - i can't recommend minted enough! you can't go wrong and there's still time to order to get your cards out on time! (not to mention a little discount on orders over $100.)
