oh hey, friday! | healthy, quick recipes is how we roll

Friday, May 29, 2015
in keeping with the theme from yesterday, i thought i'd give a quick look at some suuuuper easy recipes to prepare that are guaranteed to help you keep your calorie intake in check, fill you up, are totally full of yummy nutritious ingredients...and you should just add them to your recipe arsenal.

buuuuut first...

1 | grab this here snazzy springy-themed button and link back to september farm.
2 | link up your post at the bottom of this post.
3 | tell all your friends + have a fantastic friday.

1 | chicken apple walnut salad

so simple: grilled chicken (you can even grill several chicken breasts to have on hand), diced apple, avocado, romain, feta, walnuts, bolthouse balsamic dressing.

the key to making this salad healthy is heavy on the greens, decent amount of protein to fill you up and keep you full, easy on the walnuts, apple, dressing, feta, avocado.

also, when it comes to dressing, have you ever tried with all these yummy ingredients WITHOUT dressing? it's delicious by itself. however, if you just HAVE to have dressing, i never put more than a tablespoon.

2 | egg scramble - my go-to post workout breakfast
sometimes around the farm i feel like a short-order cook. bitty needs fed AND needs solid food now. kaye needs her oatmeal or pancake or almond butter toast or fruit // yogurt // granola, etc. and i need fed too. here's my quick idea that helps me start my day with some veggies -

in a bowl i crack two whole eggs. i dice up zucchini, mushrooms, and spinach and throw that in with the eggs. then i whip those altogether with some salt and pepper. throw that in the microwave for two minutes, stir, and throw it back in for 30 more seconds. i top it with a little diced avocado and tomatoes and enjoy! it literally takes less than five minutes. so so easy.

3 | quinoa, taco spring mix salad...yes, another salad.
i can't get enough of this salad. i eat it at LEAST twice a week, and it's so so yummy and satisfying every time.

layer the following - spring mix, quinoa, organic hamburger, cilantro, avocado, tomatoes, bolthouse ranch dressing.

my farmer likes to crunch tortilla chips and top it with cheese and sour cream instead of dressing. i think i would prefer it this way too, but since i've cut cheese and most other forms of dairy, that's a no-go for me. whomp whomp.

4 | lemony shrimp stir fry with asparagus over quinoa
recipe
yep, quinoa again. there's a solid chance i actually eat this superfood too much. i guess this is okay...because guess who else likes quinoa? kaye. and another? bitty. yep...i throw it in the baby bullet and it blends up so so nicely.

i've become slightly obsessed with trying out new blends on sawyer...i usually make kaye try it too. who knew making your kids taste test food could be fun?

i love this recipe because asparagus lasts forever and i buy the shrimp frozen at costco.

i found this recipe via pinterest. it calls for chicken, but i went with shrimp, because as it turns out...you can eat too much chicken and get super sick of it. i also used olive oil instead of canola.

my farmer was totally into this recipe - farmer approved.

5 | and even though i don't really have weekends anymore...there's a good chance i'm going to treat myself because it's the weekend. the schwan's man may have delivered three cartons of delicious ice cream (my farmer usually eats it all...no seriously...that man can pack the ice cream in). so...

#toneitup | your questions answered - PART I

Thursday, May 28, 2015

hi hi hi!

okay...so we are in week seven of the #bikiniseries and i've been compiling your questions. i think i'll do it in two parts...or else it could get suuuuper lengthy...and i still need time to eat my nightly popcorn.

(have NOT been able to kick that habit.)

let's get to it.

what is Tone It Up?

okay! tone it up is a fitness company that two gals started - katrina and karena. have a look...they are smokin' hot and want to make you smokin' hot too!

if you visit the website you'll find first and foremost they want you to buy their nutrition plan. but, if you get past that, you'll see that they post a workout schedule for you every single week laid out each day. uhhh...yes please. they have toooons of workout videos for you, most ranging between 10 - 20 minutes, which isn't long enough, but if you put enough of them together you can definitely get your sweat on. or, if you're just starting, that'll work great for you! they also have all their workouts organized - abs, total body, legs + booty, etc.

you'll also see that they have their beach babe dvd's for sale. i highly recommend. i love all the workouts they have listed and they often reference them in the weekly workout schedule. these work great for me, seeing as how there isn't a gym within 40 miles.

recipes - lots of recipes to brows. i also recommend following them on pinterest since they pin goodies all the time! and you know if they are considering eating it, it must have some nutritional value.

what are the meal plans like?

well…the basic idea is lean, clean, green…so if you stick to that you don’t even need their meal plans! you are supposed to eat four meals a day and one snack. you start with a small, protein breakfast before your first workout, then after the workout you have a recovery meal. lunch is protein, greens, and you can have fruit + healthy carbs here too…like whole wheat bread. after 3pm they discourage fruit because of the high sugar content - they don’t want your blood sugar to spike. so a snack would be like a hard boiled egg and almonds. then my favorite dinner is some sort of meat with quinoa over salad. the hardest part is cutting the dairy. whomp whomp. #givemesomecheese

what do you need to do the tone it up program?

so simple...just a few things!

equipment -
  • exercise ball
  • kettle bell (i have a 10, but need to buy a heavier one)
  • dumbbells (i have 5's and 8's)
  • waterbottle
  • beach babe dvd's
and what about the food?

what's your favorite sports bra for running?

ooooh! this is a passion of mine...seeing as how i have some gals goin' on in front. to give you an idea of what i've worked with...i used to be a 36 DD, then i lost weight and was a 34 D, then i got pregnant and i'm not sure what i was...until i started nursing, then i was a 34 E...and now i have no clue what i am. one is one size...and the other a different size. breast feeding has really killed them.

but the bra that's worked for me, for running, through it all is...drumroll...

MOVING COMFORT - FIONA

i love this bra for a few reasons - it has adjustable straps, but not the kind like on a regular bra. they adjust from the front with velcro. it's brilliant, really, because you can easily adjust them while the bra is on to get a great fit. it also has a clasped back so that you can find the right fit for your ribcage. this is key for me because i have a large bust for my frame. it's also nice that you don't have to pull it over your head.
the next running bra i order will be this one...

MOVING COMFORT - REBOUND RACER

it has all the same features as the fiona, but it's a racerback, which means i'll be able to wear racerback tank tops for running instead of a t-shirt all the time.

when do you workout?

this was something i really had to come to terms with...i felt so damn guilty! but, i've heard it a thousand times - put yourself first, and you'll be better for it!

in my case, this is so true. working out releases all sorts of glorious feel-good hormones...i'm this crazy happy mom once i get off the treadmill. i have tons of energy and i'm so so ready to get active with my crazy turtle and my sweet sawyer-muff. they probably think i have crazy eyes, but really...i just feel that good when i get done working out.

so to answer the question, i workout in the morning...usually right after i nurse sawyer.

whether i'm doing a workout video or running on the treadmill, i get everything set up. i turn on a show for kaye, i throw a million toys on the floor for both girls, i make sure kaye has her snack, juice, milk, water, potty break...really anything she might ask for in the next 45 minutes...then i get to work.

OF COURSE i feel guilty for turning on the tv so i can get a workout in, but truth be told, she usually ends up on the floor, right next to sawyer, showing her little sister how to play. it's so sweet to watch.

how do i find time?

ummm...i think this goes back to my message of putting yourself first. do it. do it guilt-free.

i'll admit, since i've been doing this bikini series challenge for the past seven weeks...things have slipped a bit around the house. dusting happens every four days instead of two. the floors are looking pretty rough. dishes sit a little longer than they should. but...i feel so good.

so when it comes to finding time...find it. twenty minutes in the morning, twenty in the evening? twenty minutes FLIES by...you'll be done before you know it!

okay...i've yammered on and on enough. i'll be doing a PART II next week to answer the rest of your questions!

if you have any more, leave a comment or send me an e-mail!

yay! it's my favorite time of the month...let me start that over.

yay! i have three great gals featured here today...and i really do love these features. i'm always so pleasantly surprised that i haven't reached the end of blog-land and that there are always fun new reads to find...like these three.

at the time, this was super embarrassing, but now looking back, it's just plain funny! as i was getting dressed for my senior prom, i went to zip up my dress and the zipper BROKE halfway up. my mom and i tried and tried to get it to go farther but it just wouldn't budge. thankfully, the zipper was on the side so it was somewhat hidden by my arm, so my mom was able to sew it up. i was able to go to prom and no one had any idea about my zipper. however, when i went to get out of the dress that night, we had to CUT me out because my mom had done such a good job sewing me up plus the zipper was stuck in the perfect spot where i couldn't get it off. it was pretty sad but funny to see my dress all cut up once i finally got out of it!

when we first got married, i was beyond excited about preparing his first dinner. problem was, i had no idea how to do anything in the kitchen. i twas a disaster zone to say the least. the marines had moved us 1500 miles away from my family, so i had no one to turn to for help! he came home to burnt food, the biggest mess in the kitchen, and a chocolate cake that looked more like a pancake or cow "you know what". his reaction was just WOW! i was so embarrassed. my big debut as a house wife was unsuccessful to say the least! looking back now, it is hilarious and we joke about it all the time. i've come a long way, thas for sure. in fact, that is what inspired the post on these cookies.

i often joke that my life is like living in Christmas Vacation and i am chevy chase. the list of embarrassing things i could tell you about me could last for years. one of the most mortifying, however, happened at work. i am an event planner and am often required to get on stage in front of a crowd of people to check that the microphones are working and that everything is ready. during one particular event, i got on stage to perform my usual tasks and remember walking one moment and then suddenly being on the ground the next. i tripped...in front of everyone. the entire room was stunned into the most horrifying silence i could imagine. to add insult to injury, i was wearing a dress that had inevitably flown up. luckily, i was able to hop back up quickly (with the aid of a guest) and run off stage, but not before the sound of my boss's voice echoed around the silent room from back stage, "she's down! she's down!" needless to say, i now ensure that all power cords are securely taped to the stage.

do you have a fitbit?

Tuesday, May 26, 2015
alrighty! on my quest to ultimate hotness (or just to get rid of my mom-gut) my farmer surprised me with a  fitbit!

i had been going back and forth and back and forth and just wasn't sure if it was going to be something i'd like wearing. i mean...to have any sort of idea of just how little you move, you have to wear it all the time. for example -

the basic goal is to get 10,000 steps a day which equates out to about 4.5 - 5ish miles a day. well, last night at around 9:30 pm as i was watching american ninja warrior with my farmer (because i'm absolutely convinced that if my farmer got on the american ninja warrior course he would absolutely kill it. there really is nothing he can't do.) i realized i only had 7,800 steps! for day two of having the fitbit...i knew i had to get my boo-tay moving. so i did.

see...it's a little motivator. i love it!

you can also find friends to do little challenges with - this is where you guys come in.

DO YOU HAVE A FITBIT?

if so, shoot me an e-mail with your fitbit e-mail address and i'll add you as a friend. super fun, right!? right. let's do this! because right now i only have two fitbit friends.

also...i'll be posting all about my six week #bikiniseries results tomorrow! i have to admit, i'm pretty disappointed in myself. there are just too many damn opportunities to celebrate or have frozen yogurt or enjoy a beer. so that's that. tomorrow, i'll be back.

happy tuesday! hope your long weekend was wonderful!

oh hey, friday! | backsplash, baby food, birthday party

Friday, May 22, 2015
yappy friday. yes. i meant yappy. i always say it that way in my head when i write happy anything. it just sounds funnier.

so...it's been a bear of a week. and i mean a bear.

kaye has been sick since sunday...and is finally on the mend. but wouldn't you know it - her little sister is now on day three of being sick, and i'm so over it. my farmer says i have incredible bedside manner...in the most sarcastic tone ever.

but hey, it's friday...so we have that going for us.

1 | grab this here snazzy springy-themed button and link back to september farm.
2 | link up your post at the bottom of this post.
3 | tell all your friends + have a fantastic friday.

M Y  F I V E

1 | our kitchen update.
my farmer totally killed it and busted out tiling our backsplash. this was quite the task because i wouldn't say our kitchen is small. there was a lot of surface area to cover. but it's finished, and i love it, and i think he loves it...so we're in business.
now i just need to decide on some new pendant lights for over the island. i'm leaning this way...
source
2 | rent the runway.
source
uhhh...i chickened out. every dress i wanted was unavailable in my "backup" size...so that solved that dilemma. i ended up ordering the below dress from banana republic. i get free hemming, so i'm going to take it in and have it done inappropriately short...because that's how i roll.

3 |  killin' it in the kitchen.
pardon the blur
toot that horn! i'm bringing the heat in the kitchen. not only have i been cooking suuuuuuper lean // clean // green, but i also got a wild hair and bought a baby bullet for my gal sawyer. i've decided to start making her some of her food. i never had this issue with kaye. girlfriend had a full set of teeth by six months, practically. but my sawyer-muff...she needs a little help.

the first experiment was zucchini and sweet potato. we were having them roasted for dinner, so i boiled up a portion, threw it in the baby bullet...boom. sawyer loved it!

i have big plans to continue this strategy of just blending up whatever we are having for dinner and giving it to sawyer...i know rocket science.

4 | sisters.
it warms my heart when sawyer tackles kaye. she's really starting to hold her own around the farm.

5 | birthday party!

so...amy's sweet muffin-boy is turning TWO tomorrow! i can't even believe it...i'm sure she can't either. anyway...amy plans the very best parties, so to say i'm a little excited is quite accurate. plus kaye and i have been practicing singing happy birthday.
anyway...amy let me whip up a little birthday banner for him, and i just loved the way it turned out. the party is farm-themed, of course, so the color scheme and saying are on point...
so while we're getting our plow on...

sponsor post | jill @ capri + co.

Wednesday, May 20, 2015
listen to me. don't read this post if you don't want to put your jealous pants on.

don't read this post if you're easily wooed by adorable 2 1/2 year olds.

don't read this post if you've always wanted to be one of those suuuuuper cute pregnant gals but ended up in leggings and a cardigan every day (eh-hem...i'll sheepishly raise my hand to that).

don't read this post if you often have hair envy (raises hand again).

DO read this post if you like winning $50 gift cards to TARGET!

do read this post if you want to meet jill from capri + co.

you'll want to, i promise.

KARLI | jill! yay! so...i've been reading your blog for a bit now, but for the people who haven't...

what will we find within the first three minutes of finding your blog?

JILL | In the first three minutes of finding my blog you will see that I talk a lot about my 2 year old daughter, Caprilee, and my current pregnancy (due with baby boy in about 1 month).
Then, you will find my love of home décor and simple DIY projects. (When I say simple DIY, I mean using spray paint to make something pretty.)
I love connecting with others, sharing my thoughts, and the things I love most.
KARLI | i love it. your suuuuper-smokin' pregnancy almost makes me think about wanting to get pregnant again. then i snap back to reality when i realize i'm going to get woken up at 4 am...don't ask what we've been going through out here on the farm...i digress...

tell us more about that cute gal of yours! who is she more likely to dial up and ask for a play date?

JILL | Caprilee is almost 2 1/2 and so much fun! Although she has been testing us more and more I can't get enough of her evolving personality. She loves Minnie Mouse, cookies (any kind of snacks, really), dancing, baby dolls, and swimming. I'm looking forward to her taking on the big sister role.
She would definitely love to cause some trouble with your adorable Kaye. Being only a few months apart in age I think they would be best friends if they met in person. P.s. Can Kaye teach Capri a thing or two about this whole potty training business? If you read my post 'Operation Potty Training' you'll know we didn't get too far.

KARLI | oh girl. when kaye went in the toilet the first time i cried. i couldn't even believe it. and i'm not even a crier. it's seriously like winning the parenting gold medal. i swear i thought she would never do it. now she does it all the time. when it clicks...it clicks. your capri will be there before you know it.

let's get real - you're one of the most darling (read: hottest) pregnant gals ever. with seven weeks to go...how are you doing?

JILL | Thank you -- You are too sweet! I think most mamas will agree that the last month(s) of pregnancy are the hardest...and the longest. I came across this picture the other day and it could not be truer...
Overall, this pregnancy has really, really, flown by and it has been very good to me. I really can’t complain. I am just so excited to meet our little boy!

KARLI | you're so so so right. that's exactly how i felt...and i'm sure it's how my sister is feeling right now! she's 36.5 weeks...and counting every hour.

any favorite pregnancy posts to share?

JILL | Our gender reveal party was so much fun! Read all about it here.
Also, the video we made of how I surprised Tim that we were pregnant will always be a favorite memory. See it here.

And me getting real with my third trimester thoughts here.

KARLI | bah! he wore his blue undies! and nuts // no nuts with the m + m's. i loooooove it! and that video...the sweetest.

favorite question that has nothing to do with babies - which cast of the real housewives would you most likely be on?

JILL | I think I would fit most on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. However, I miss the girls from the Orange County. I don't think I could hang with the girls in NYC, Atlanta, or Miami. Wouldn't that be so much fun to be a part of any of those casts? Totally a guilty pleasure of mine!

KARLI | isn't the OC starting like...tonight? the new season? yes? hang on...let me check my DVR.

nope, I jumped the gun - june 8th, people. june 8th.

three guilty pleasures...go.

JILL | Besides binge watching trashy reality shows...

1. Popcorn and M & M's
2. Buying way too many throw pillows + blankets
3. Online shopping

If you're like me and one of your guilty pleasures is online shopping, or browsing Target, okay, or just shopping in general, enter my $50 Target Gift Card giveaway below.

Thank you so much for having me, Karli!

no jill, thank you! so much fun to chat with you, stalk your blog, and share you with the september farm friends!

and if you want more jill...

diy | a pinterest fail - painted mason jars

Tuesday, May 19, 2015
no seriously...how hard could it be to paint mason jars.

not hard at all, that's how hard...but somehow i still managed to mess it up with left my farmer plenty of ammunition for days of snarky comments...until i threw the jars away.

i painted the jars to hold flowers for the mother's day brunch i hosted. in the end, they kind of turned out...they got the job done.

i digress...

if you want to paint some mason jars to create some super cute vases for a party, or maybe just your home, i'm all about this. super cute.

however, if i want to paint some mason jars...next time i'll plan on it being a two day project that still doesn't turn out.
S U P P L I E S

mason jar(s)
foam brush
black chalkboard paint
paint color of choice
ribbon

1 | you'll start out by painting your mason jar black. suuuuper duper simple. i just put my hand inside the jar and gave it a single coat.
this is where i made my first mistake. do not apply any additional paint until your jar is completely dry.
2 | as stated, after your jars are completely dry, in a thin layer, apply the color of your choice paint. this coat will not and should not cover the black paint. you'll have to apply a few more layers.
3 | wrap the mouth of the jar in your desired ribbon for a little extra personalization and load your vases with flowers.

done and done!

4 | optional final step - you can lightly sand your jars in different spots and on the letters to give it a custom, distressed look.

*the main reason mine didn't turn out is because i didn't wait for the jars to be completely dry between coats and the paint i picked was less peachy and more neon-y. it looks so terrible. so i ended up mixing some white and red paint i had on hand to make a light pink. i added that as a final coat and my jars ended up having a peachy/pink hue going on.

then they ended up in the trash.

oh hey, monday? | a kitchen update + potty training + running 12 miles

Monday, May 18, 2015
no no...i'm not crazy and starting another linkup for monday, but i can't wait until friday to tell you about our weekend happenings!

1 | i am a suuuuuper proud mama. my gal kaye is potty trained enough that we are no longer going to buy her diapers. so...at two years and six and a half months...she did it. kaye notifies us when she has to go to the bathroom. she can pull her pants down and back up. and she's been accident free for over a week...except for that one time when she was trapped in the car and the other time when she was locked outside.

trapped in car - we were headed to boise and she fell asleep.

locked outside - kaye and i were jumping on the trampoline and i heard sawyer wake up from her nap on the monitor. i ran inside to snag her, and by the time i made it back downstairs kaye was standing there (in her accident) telling me she was sorry. bless her heart. i felt just terrible.

regardless, this morning i cancelled our honest diapers subscription...which is mula in our pockets. yay!

2 | my man...that farmer of mine. he continues on his quest to show me he's the best farmer/husband around.

about three years ago we finished our house enough to move in...just before kaye was born. this was a huge step for us...right out of that single wide. at that point hour house was probably only 60% complete.

since then we've - finished the basement (except the bathroom), backsplashed the kitchen (this past weekend, yay!), landscaped (a little)...all this brings us to about 75% completion.

we still need to - finish landscaping, do crown molding in the kitchen, backsplash master bath, finish bathroom downstairs (it's in studs)...oh yeah...and build a garage.

mind you, my farmer has done an outlandish majority of this with his two hands. you know, in his "off" time.

anyway, yesterday he got busy tiling our kitchen backsplash. it's almost complete, but we ran out of tile. but even with that only mostly finished, i LOVE it. it brightens our kitchen and makes me feel fancy. now i just need new light fixtures over the island.

3 | so...i'm training for a half marathon. this past weekend my training program called for me to complete 12 miles. unfortunately, it was terribly windy, rainy, and cold on saturday. there was no way i could run outside. so i shut myself into our treadmill room and ran 12 miles on a treadmill. let me tell you, it was terrible. i don't recommend this...ever.

4 | the balance bike. so...i've seen kids much younger than kaye master the balance bike, but my gal just won't do it. maybe it's because she has this guy pushing her around, making it way too fun.

5 | happy monday!

@karlibellmeier
