KAYE | SEVENTEEN MONTHS

guys…my turtle is 17 months. and you know what that means. time to start planning her second birthday party…right?

i kind of blew it with her first birthday party…what with running around like a crazy woman trying to transition everything from inside to outside. who knew it was going to be 70 degrees on october 30? anyway…

kaye is nearly a year and a half and i CAN absolutely believe it. some people say that time zips by before your eyes and you don't know where it has flown. i tend to disagree.

maybe time will speed up a tad when kaye stops nailing me in the head with a ping pong paddle? or how about when she replaces whining with talking? or stops fighting me on everything. that'll be a nice transition.

but turtle does do many many adorable things that make me smile with that ridiculous "mom-smile." then i catch myself looking around to see if anyone else saw just how adorable my daughter is.

"did you see that? did you? that's my gal. she's amazing"

let's just say that with the amount of clapping and praises she gets…turtle won't be with a lack of self-esteem or confidence. she probably thinks she poos rainbows and puppies at this point.
still struggles in the hair department.
the older my best gal gets the clearer it becomes that she is her farmer's daughter. (i mean…we always knew this, but it's unbelievable how alike these two are.) i'm in serious trouble.

turtle is // stubborn, strong-willed, funny, quick to smile, an incredible sleeper, snacker, loves the outdoors, and loves me…a lot. all spot-on traits of our farmer.

traits i hope she picks up from our farmer in the near future?
  • our farmer's brain - let's just say he's not lacking in the intelligence department. i constantly have to bring my A-game or resign to stop talking.
  • our farmer's hair - i have no hair. our farmer has glorious, thick locks that shows no signs of thinning…ever. when i cut his hair it's like i've shaved a cat. if turtle gets his hair she'll be a brunette with cascading waves and bright blue eyes. swoon? no big deal…we made the most beautiful child. 
  • our farmer's metabolism - our guy can't gain a pound. he has a permanent six-pack. dancer legs for miles. if turtle gets his metabolism…life will be easy.
this past month i've decided you need to socialize a bit. i mean…you can't have me as her only friend. so, with your high energy and dare-devil attitude i thought gymnastics would be perfect. meh. we're working on it. you love the trampoline and climbing over the mats, but when it comes to following directions and not throwing epic fits…you've made me the mom who has to take her daughter outside to calm down. let's nix this asap.
your dancing has improved greatly. you clap. you sing. you swing your arms. and somehow your farmer taught you how to "get low." your booty-drop kills us every time.

oh gal…i'm absolutely positive that if there were an animal noise making competition for one year olds you would win every single time. 

to name a few // sheep, elephant, goat, pig, dog, cat, bird, owl, bear, snake…and we throw tractor in there for good measure. you're basically brilliant…

except for you're still not talking. when is this "language explosion" going to happen i hear so much about? any day…still waiting...

a few notable traits i've noticed this month // you like doors closed in the house. you are constantly closing the bathroom door, the door to your room, and the door to our bedroom. not sure why, but it's your preference. 

you are also the gassiest person i've ever met. you fart when you laugh. you fart when you throw fits. you fart when you squat down to pick something up. you're a farting machine. let's hope you grow out of this one a little bit as you get older. 

you also don't care for large birds at all. they actually make you flinch when you see one overhead. that's okay…large birds are freaky.
oh sweetness, your farmer and i love you so much. even though you go to bed at 7:30 pm which has really cut into our socialization…you're worth it. thank you for making everyone around you smile and laugh. you're loved a trillion times over and over amen.

5 | game shows i could have rocked so hard

that's me. child of the 90's. you could have also called me an athlete. just check me out! denim shorts. shirt tucked in. hair down. athlete.

because i was such an athlete, this is also how i knew i could have rocked being on a game show really hard.

i guess you could have said i was a bit of a reality tv kinda gal way back when. any chance i had to get my hands on some cable tv you could count on me turning it directly to nickelodeon to catch up on my favorite kid-run game shows.

this show was actually on PBS, but you bet i watched it every day after school. i never got the answers correct. i never knew the countries they were talking about as the kids zipped around the giant map placing their lights. my parents even bought me the computer game of where in the USA is carmen sandiego because they knew where in the world was over my head. i was terrible at the computer game too. it didn't stop me from yelling at the tv and taking my best guess…and every now and then getting one right. very similar to how i watch jeopardy. and rockapella deserves a shootout too.

this show was a little less intellectual and required a little more coordination. that's why i knew my family could never be on the show. i mean…it's not like we're not coordinated but let's just say there would have been some weak links, plus my dad is a bit of a show-boat and would have embarrassed my sister and me to no end. but how sweet would it have been to win a vacation to disney world?

i love loved this show. i think i liked so much because i thought it was the one show i had the best shot of getting on. i treated it like gambling and would pick my favorite team and see how it all shook out. i usually chose based on how many cute guys were on that team or if i thought the girls looked uncoordinated. and then i would wonder to myself, "where do they get these people?" don't they realize  i'm just sitting here ready to catch a flight at a moments notice? stupid.

you bet i saved the best for last. this was my absolute most favorite for ever and ever amen. i absolutely, without a doubt in my mind know i could have beat most of the kids on their best day. just watching the sad, uncoordinated kids bumble through the obstacles or up the crag (remember the crag?). gah! the frustration just having to watch them knowing how much better i would have competed. they didn't' stand a chance. this show was also a nice transition into my love affair with gladiators.

of course i say these things never knowing how my dreams of greatness would have shaken out. i probably would have gotten too nervous, cried, punched a fellow competitor, ripped my shirt off, and ran around the arena naked…but who knows. it was the 90's.

i know a gal who knows a gal. this gal is getting married in an absolutely stunning location in a town just south of where farmer and i were married. so as i said, it's gorgeous.

did i mention it's in the summer time at a ski resort? if that doesn't give you a clear picture of the mountain glory that is to be the backdrop, i don't know what will.

anyway, this gal is getting married and i had the chance to meet with her, have a meal of food and talk shop. my favorite kind of shop. wedding shop.

i snazzied together this little board for her knowing that her colors are cream, black, and silver. and what with it being in the mountains and all…natural greens are bound to find their way into the pallet.

the conclusion was rustic mountain elegance with touches of vintage chic. i can't say i'm mad about what i'm seeing. it'll be simple and lovely and perfect.

These wooden spoons are my family history, my present and my future. Their story is complex, yet romantically simple. They represent hardship, character, and success. They are my favorite memories. They are everything I want for myself and my family. I am the daughter of two fearless immigrants from Romania. My mother contributes to my blog in a series titled “In My Mother’s Words” where she writes about our incredible family history. I am the wife of a hilarious and courageous man who is in the process of getting out of the Army after ten years of service. It’s been an exciting yet terrifying life change. Figuring out what the next chapter of our life looks has been an emotional roller coaster. I put my thirty day notice in at work only have to have all of our plans fall apart a few weeks later. Now it seems we finally figured out our next chapter and we couldn't be more excited to start this journey.
I am Motor City born and bred but have been enjoying the heck out of life in Music City for the past four years. I’ve seen more concerts in the past few years than I have in the last ten combined. Living in Nashville has birthed a passion for the arts, small businesses and independent restaurants. And while I'll probably never be 100% ready to leave this town, we are packing up and moving to Cincinnati next week. In the spirit of saying goodbye to Nashville, I figured it'd be appropriate to recap our last official concert at the Ryman Auditorium, AKA the time I threw a temper tantrum while sitting front row at the Lumineers concert.

i'm on day three of a cold that has moved from my throat to body aches to the most severe sinus pressure…uh…ever. granted, i've never had a sinus infection. i hear those are pretty terrible.

3 | once a week my saint of a farmer takes our little gal for the entire day. it's an understatement to say i look forward to it A LOT. like…more than i look forward to eating an entire box of samoa girl scout cookies. anyway…farmer took kaye on wednesday and i took myself to a movie…complete with popcorn, of course. the wolf of wall street  is…ummm…fantastic. as in…so so good. granted you're going to see a lot of boobies and vaginas. a lot of effing and drug use. you may even see leonardo do some blow into a gal's bootie. (you've been warned.) aside from all that…it's a great story. i recommend…just don't take your mom…or your dad.

4 | i took my best gal to her second week of gymnastics. with each minute that ticks by in the class my dreams of being a stage mom are being crushed. maybe she needs a super cute leotard to get her in the spirit? we're talking…the worst kid in the class. i actually had to pick her up off the floor and take her outside to calm down after epic fit #3 was thrown. the other moms were looking at me with one of two expressions: 1 - thank god that's not my kids. 2 - i feel so bad for that mom…and thank god that's not my kid.

you know what i like about this blogging bit? the types of blogs out there are limitless. you can literally find fantastic blogs on most anything on the daily. 

correct me if i'm wrong, but blogs seems to be a bit clique-esque. as in…the same types of blogs tend to stick with one another. 

this makes perfect sense because you've probably found something in common with the blogs you read. either that, or the blog is undeniably fantastic. eh-hum…september farm, anyone?

well…i'm pleased to bring to you a blog that covers topics far more important than anything i have yet to write about. (maybe it's something i should consider?)

a fresh start on a budget is just that blog. i mean…just have a look at 10 things she wants her daughter to know. it's the exact list i think each of us should read and re-read. this is important stuff, people.
and how darling is this little gal of her's? what i wouldn't do for that glowing, youthful coloring and skin. (was that creepy? pretty creepy. but her daughter is just so cute.)

not to mention that they totally look like they have the best time as a family. like…a family that truly truly enjoys spending some quality time together. plus her husband and she were high school sweethearts. i still find this incredibly romantic. 
the bit i find the most amazing? karissa suffered a stroke when her daughter was about six years old. she spent a month in the hospital. having a daughter of my own, i can only imagine the strength and determination it must have taken to recover. but guess what? she did! she writes about her journey here. talk about one strong gal. 

another post you should check…her trip to her first blog conference. i don't know how she did it. i would be an absolute nervous wreck. lots and lots of sweating from my armpits. but she did! after reading this post, i do have a new resolve to seek out a blog conference. i mean…the networking alone is priceless. does anyone know if they serve adult beverages at those things? i'd never be able to relax enough to enjoy myself. 

in hindsight…i probably should have had a few drinks before i went on stage for my pageant. i digress…

it's no secret to my friends and family. i'm downright obsessed with growing my blog. so much so that i wrote a scathing post (that i never posted) about how angry i was at big bloggers who were saying that they were "blogging to blog" and that they needed to "stop looking at their stats."

while that's just fine for them, and i'm sure it's true to a certain extent, i'm just not there yet in my blogging career. yes. i just accidentally called my blogging aspirations a career. that might be as shameful as that one time i was in a pageant. anyway…

i wrote a post a bit ago about an idea that i had to blow up your blog. i was convinced you needed one ingredient…and i still know it couldn't hurt. get yourself/blog a celebrity backer. all you have to do is gently stalk your celebrity of choice via twitter, instagram, restaurant, etc. eventually they'll have to show you some social media love. just ask erin from LIY.

fast forward a few months...recently i had another idea. as in…just about five minutes ago. what if you became best friends with several of the big bloggers in our little blogging world? i mean…they are practically little celebrities in their own right. can you imagine the free shout-outs and social media lovey-love you would get?

i would recommend picking several types of bloggers because different blogs attract a different audience.
yoga pants could help you tap into the texas, free spirit, wild, cocktail-drinking crowd.
sydney's daybook could encourage love from all over the country, really. mormons, moms, fashionistas, top-knot wearers…and maybe even five or six people from idaho...because that's where she's from. but seriously…i thought maybe sydney and i could be friends since we're both from this rarely heard-from state. no love, people. no. love.
maybe you love sports? or maybe you just think those professional athletes are pretty fine? well then maybe you should be besties with venus trapped in mars. girlfriend has the sports-world dialed in.

so i'm probably going to work on getting these gals to fall in love with me. i mean…everyone needs a friend in idaho.

they should know that i like to eat. i like to vacation. i like cocktails. and that i have a sweating problem.

it's where friendship starts, people. it's where friendship starts.

1 | i couldn't help it. i had to bypass st. patrick's day altogether and start decorating for spring + easter. i started with a spring chalkboard and moved right along to some glorious packages that were delivered last week. some easter eggs. a bunny. several guilder gold frames that need pictures. total beauts. 
2 | last weekend farmer and i took kaye to the zoo. naturally, she loved the goats the very very most. even though we have goats on the farm at her disposal. girlfriend acted like it was the most unique creature she'd ever seen…absolutely could not get enough. my farmer had a pretty good time too.
3 | so…i was totally going to participate in a st. patrick's day recipe linkup with a bunch of gals. i made these super good-looking rainbow, mini donuts. so so cute, am i right? or am i right? i'm right. don't be fooled. they taste like gar-bage. garbage. i mean…the icing was pretty tasty, but the fact that the recipe is trying to pass these off as delicious donuts…tsk tsk.
4 | finally…amazon decided to deliver this sweet little gift from the heavens. you see…my gal loves climbing and loves a good slide…no matter how short it is. five feet, three feet…she's all about it. girlfriend spent nothing short of three hours on this little number today and i expect it'll be the gift that keeps on giving. hours of enjoyment for her. hours of peaceful observation for me from a lawn chair. count me in.
5 | speaking of fine fine weather, girlfriend and i have been getting outdoors for some moving and grooving. we've taken the bob stroller out for a few runs. i may have brought the iPad with us so turtle could enjoy some in-run entertainment. on about mile 2.5 she threw it off the side and i quickly rolled over it. we won't be doing that again. she'll just need to enjoy our sweet farm views. which is exactly what she's been doing during our hikes in the backpack. seriously, three miles with 30 pounds on your back…that's a workout.

Now enough about me, let's get to the good stuff.

beEMspiredLet's start with an energy boostin meditation to get us centered and focused. To the count of 4 I would like you to breathe in (1-2-3-4) and hold your breath (1-2-3-4), breathe out (1-2-3-4) and hold your breath (1-2-3-4). And again, breathe in (1-2-3-4) hold (1-2-3-4), out (1-2-3-4), hold (1-2-3-4). Now take your hands into prayer position and press firmly together for 10 (1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10) and realse for 15 (1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12-13-14-15). Repeat that two more times.
(Try this meditation around 3 or 4 in the afternoon when your energy begins to lag and see if it doesn't boost your concentration.)
Now that we are hopefully centered and energized, let's talk about our goals. You may be thinking, "Emily, I have kids, a husband, and even dogs. There is no room or time for me to start focusing on my goals." I call your bluff. I truly believe if you do not take care of yourself first and dedicate time to developing who you are and what you want you cannot show up for those most important in your life.

A few weeks ago I found myself misguided, anxious, unfocused, and committing to things that I didn't really have an interest in. I was transitioning into a new role at work and with that came a lot more responsibility and unnecessary expectations I was putting on myself. Do you ever do that? Set expectations for yourself that are completely unnecessary? 
Imagine having started a new role at your job already feeling overwhelmed and then committing to participating in a sprint triathlon never having done such a thing, just to see if you could do it. Foolishness. I was stretching myself too thin and I wasn't staying in line with the goals and vision I have set for my life. My solution: 60 second goals. 
Rewriting my goals centers me and brings me back down to reality. What is it I am most passionate about, want to do, desire to see for my life? It all comes out in that sliver of time, one-minute. 
Are you ready to step back and evaluate the next few years of your life? 10 years from now do you want to be in the same place you are in right now, or do you want to see change happen? By writing out your goals you are acknowledging that your journey not yet over, that it has many more miles to go. I believe in you and I believe you want more out of life than "ordinary." I encourage you to dream big, think big, and do big things!
Grab a piece of paper, a pen, a timer, and an open mind. It's goal time!
60seconds

When I sat down to do this recently I had no idea the impact it would have on me. Some of the things that rolled off the tip of my pen surprised me while most of them spoke very true to my heart. Here are a few of the goals from my 60 second goal session:
  • non profit
  • 2 public speaking gigs
  • buy a house
  • go on a retreat
  • get another dog
  • start a garden
  • practice yoga (more)
  • write/publish a book
My list was almost two pages long and when the timer buzzed I was energized, rejuvenated, and most importantly inspired. Sometimes we just have to remind ourselves that we want big things for our life and even though we've gone off the beaten path it's that easy to get centered and refocused on the things that matter most to us. I encourage you to really sit with your goals over the next few days. Maybe write them on post-it notes and stick them around the house, or if you're like me, write them on a chalkboard wall so you have to walk past them every day. Whatever you do, don't dismiss them. What you've written on that page is a letter from your head to you. Put action to your goals and this time next year I guarantee you won't be in the same place you're in right now.
