christmas dinner - nailed it (and some random holiday photos)

Monday, December 30, 2013
as we gear up to bring in 2014, i thought i'd close out 2013 with some final holiday photos.

i call this photo // optical illusion

KIDDING! my farmer…he's pretty fine. like…he's totally hot.

there are several reasons i love this picture //
  • kaye staring at his bicep
  • kaye wearing her hat inside
  • kaye's belly sticking out
  • and my farmer flexing.
this photo was snapped to check the lighting before i took some real photos…but i like this one the best.

and this chalkboard?

it was by far the most high maintenance piece of holiday decor.

i re-wrote the "let it snow" about 17 times each line. i was nearly ready to light it on fire.

but i'm pleased with the end result.

the stockings? they lived right next to kaye's living room toy storage for weeks and she didn't pull them down once. it also deserves a mention that she only broke two ornaments…and they weren't even ornaments we hung on the tree. so that's a win.

i also stitched our names on our stockings when my farmer and i were dating.

seems like a lifetime ago.

i made christmas cakepops to hand out to our neighbors…i didn't eat a single one. i can hardly believe it.

i continue to be obsessed with our christmas decor. it'll be a sad sad day when the rest of it comes down. i have that penciled into the schedule sometime in april. i really REALLY wish it was christmas like…half the year.

did anyone else know pomegranates are so frickin' expensive? i didn't.

they are. but we needed one for the christmas salad…so i bought an entire box at costco. it made sense at the time.

speaking of christmas salad…

make this salad asap //
  • spring mix
  • (1) pear
  • (1/2) pomegranite
  • goat cheese
  • walnuts
  • dressing of choice - i chose a creamy vinaigrette and it was perfection
for christmas dinner's main dish i bucked tradition and nixed the ham.

i went with a delicious pork loin with cranberry sauce. (recipe here.)

i'm not exactly a whiz in the kitchen but let me toot my horn. toot.

and another shout out to my farmer.

as i manned the dishes at the sink, he enthusiastically helped with the pie-making.

speaking of pie-making // i really really believe i make a killer apple pie. i'll be posting that recipe sometime soon-ish.

have a snazzy monday…and an even snazzier new year's eve!!

'twas the day after christmas...

Friday, December 27, 2013
it's the day after christmas and if you're like our household you're frantically pulling the ornaments off the tree because it's about to spontaneously combust.

dry. dry as a bone.

allow me to put my bragging pants on…but i'm not sure if you're all aware…i have the very very best farmer in all the land.

let's just say i was good this year. very very good.

not only did i receive a new pair of twin-tip, powder skis…

(i want nobody to be deceived. i'm not a skiing bad-ass. quite the contrary. i prefer the groomers. you'll only find me in the trees on accident. and if i happen to go over a jump you can expect a little equipment yard sale…and you'll be able to find my pride somewhere uphill from my wreck.)

but guess who will also be traveling to california for a kid-free, four day vay-cay to see her sister?

it's me. i'm going.

granted, my heart already aches at the thought of leaving kaye (and my farmer) for those four days…but it's equally bursting at the idea of sleeping in, and not having to prepare meals for her, and not having to change her diaper, and not having to pick up toys, and not dealing with her mini-fits…and…and…i'm just really excited.

i wasn't the only good girl in the house, though. kaye held up her end of the deal too.

if you remember, i wrote about kaye's wish list here. i also said she wouldn't be getting anything because she already has too much shi…stuff.

she has too much stuff. it's a problem.

but i just couldn't help myself. neither could my farmer…he's an instigator.
1 // 2 // 3 similar // 4 // 5
needless to say, the tractor is her most favorite and tears through our house like a maniac. thank god for "open-concept." it really allows her to build some speed.

girlfriend was built for speed.

i hope all y'all of you guys and yours had a really super christmas with lots of food, beverage, family and friends. yay!

a holiday house tour…actually just my living room and kitchen

is anyone else in "power-christmas" mode?

this can include, but is not limited to…
  • christmas crafts
  • christmas baking
  • christmas drinking
  • sending christmas cards
  • shopping for gifts
  • shopping for christmas dinner
  • christmas jammies
  • christmas drinking
  • you get the idea…
  • oh yeah…and christmas drinking
well, out here on the farm we are participating in some christmas here and some christmas there and i wanted to give you fine folk a little taste of a festive farm…

1// as your know…kaye completed her first pieces of art. i only painted about 95% of them.

2// kaye is also forced to wear christmas jammies every. single. night.

and she may get/have to stay in them until after lunch. don't judge me.

you can also see in the above picture that the "presents" sign will most definitely not be hung this year…but will rather lean until after the new year.

3// i also repurposed every red piece of home decor i could find.

4// this santa is a cookie jar and we have yet to receive any baked goods from anyone to fill it. i'm about to take it personally…

5// our tree leaves a lot to be desired this year. we picked it up on a sunday and it was approximately 4º outside…and windy. very windy. i typically go with a noble fir. they are thin with strong branches and just look clean.

this tree is short, fat, and leans to the left.

(that's what she said.)

5+1// i'm a total sucker for plaid. i bought a duvet in the same material. i'm scared to put it on our bed because if my farmer sees one more thing i've purchased…we might get a good old-fashioned talking-to.

and there you have it. i fully intend to drop some cold, hard billz every holiday season on more christmas decor until our house is so over the top it makes me sick to my stomach.

but since this is only our second christmas in the house…this is definitely a good start.

excuse me now. i'm going to continue to enjoy my friday morning with some coffee and bailey's.

linkin' up…

festive farm - our 2013 christmas card

Thursday, December 19, 2013
last year i bought some darling christmas cards from target and wrote a unique message in each one until i was cross-eyed and my hand was cramping.

this year…with as busy as kaye is…it just wasn't in the cards for me. i could have done it during nap time…but that time is precious reality show watching/coffee drinking/running-time and i wasn't about to sacrifice.

so i hopped on minted and started browsing their holiday cards. i love their designs. they are just oh so stylish.

however…it was a tough pill for me to swallow when i realized i'd be spending over $150 on pieces of cardstock. i just couldn't stomach that…and neither could my farmer.

so i jumped on etsy and purchased some image files and got to work in photoshop.

after about 10 hours of youtube tutorials our card was complete.

our grand total for christmas cards this year was $33 + stamps.

nailed it.

i'm under no illusions that had i purchased from minted they would probably be cuter and of higher quality…but these definitely get the job done.

merry holidays.

gettin' christmas crafty on the farm

Wednesday, December 18, 2013
you know how it goes.

you see something on pinterest and know that you can pull it off like gangbusters…and it'll probably be even better than that lame crap someone else pinned because you are doing it. and you are awesome.

yay! enthusiasm! i love it!

well…maybe i don't go into my crafts with that much enthusiasm…and maybe i give kaye a little more credit than a 13 month old should get.

(i definitely give her more credit than she should get.)

girlfriend has attitude. anyway…

i saw some mistletoes all over pinterest…and what with being a sucker for christmas and all…i commissioned kaye for the dirty work.

i grabbed an 8x10 canvas.

some washable, crayola finger paints.

stripped girlfriend down to her skivvies and let her go to town.

no…no i did not.

i very carefully dipped her right foot in the green paint and very delicately but firmly placed her right foot on the canvas.

we then quickly walked to the sink and washed her foot.

we repeated that exact process with the left foot, and that was that.

we had our mistletoes

our second project was some simple finger painting. girlfriend took to it like it was old hat.

i'll let her painting do the talking…mmmmk?

girlfriend only ate one peanut butter ritz dipped in red paint. but don't worry…it's non-toxic…i checked after it looked like she had hooker red lipstick on.

on a COMPLETELY different note…i wrote a little guest post over on julie's blog today. she has an amazing series called the breastfeeding diaries

have a looky-lou should you be inclined!

a holiday DIY

Monday, December 16, 2013
what's the first rule of diy?

there are no rules.

what's the second rule of diy?

NEVER…i repeat, never rush the creative process.

if you say you're going to do a diy one week (like…before thanksgiving) and you don't end up completing the diy until 10 days before christmas…you know what. that's okay. because it wasn't rushed.

so you may remember when i found this sign at pottery barn and i almost impulsively purchased it.

peace sign

it was $120 and i thought to myself…i could make that. and so i did.

well…i attempted. please note that i abandoned the idea of trying to include the rustic stain and just went with a white board and vinyl lettering…but here's how i did that.

1// buy some boards at home depot and then do nothing with them for at least a month. this will ensure that they warp just the way you want. it will also ensure that they won't lay flat against your wall when you hang them. it adds to the rustic/aged flare.

2// when you realize you'll never do this project on your own, drive 1.5 hours to your dad's barn and make him help you. he'll inspect your warped boards and look displeased, but reassure him that you intended for the boards to be total crap.

3// now your boards have been sufficiently judged. why bother with hand-sanding them when your dad, with his power-sander, can do it? it's what any smart DIYer would do.

4// next, you distress. my dad's favorite tool for distressing is basically the rustiest chain he could find. i tried beating the board once…and exactly once. it bounced off the board and whipped me in the hand. after i stopped crying, my dad took over the distressing portion of the project. thanks dad.

my dad…he's a handsome fella. so when he was embracing the camera…i said, "why not?" and snapped away.

(be on the lookout for his next outfit post.)

5// painting meant it was my turn. i took some off-white paint that i used to paint all the trim in our house. i mean…i could have spent an hour in home depot trying to pick the perfect cream to match the pottery barn picture…but ain't nobody got time for that.

6// after your project is sufficiently cured (is cured the right term here?) you can add your vinyl. please note that i believe the actual pottery barn "peace" sign is painted…but if i had attempted that it would have turned into a four year old's project and probably a few more tears. so i went with vinyl. i commissioned a gal who does vinyl lettering and she whipped up two sheets for me for minimal cost ($5 p/word. if you need some lettering…let me know. i'll let her know.)

first, lay your word-sheet on the board where you want it and secure it with painter's tape.

second, cut the sheet into sections so it's easier to manage.

third, peel off the backer, making sure the letters stick to the front.

fourth, flip it baaaack over onto the board and rub the letters firmly making sure you have good connection.

fifth, peel off the sheet section by section and revel in your craftiness.

7// don't worry. i'm not delusional. i realize my boards don't really look like the pottery barn sign, but i still like them and they'll hang in our casa for many holidays to come…warped shape and all.

i left out the best part - they are multi-holiday awesome. on one said it says "turkey" and on the other side "presents." this way i can hang them for several months instead of just digging it out for christmas.

another note - i was going to have the board say "tradition" and "peace," but my farmer specifically requested "turkey" and "presents"…and who am i to deny his creative license?

happy holidays!
